Konso Pitek, Emily

Description

“The Konso are comprised of three groups [regions] living in southern Ethiopia—the Garati, the Takadi, and the Turo…”(eHRAF World Cultures: Konso Culture Summary). The regions are each comprised of several semi-autonomous towns that possess a cultural unity based on allegiance to one of the great regional poqalla (religious/civil leaders), sacred drum cycles, and an age-grade system (Hallpike, 2008:88). The Konso do not have an official organized religion or political system, but share a set of common ideas, rituals, and conventions. For the Konso, religion and society are the intertwined assumptions, beliefs, and practices of life.
