Office of Health Technology AssessmentCentre for Health Services & Policy ResearchS 184 - Koerner Pavilion2211 Wesbrook MallVancouver, B.C., Canada V6T 2BS April 1993PREFACEResearching and developing technology projects in the health sector has become one of the fastest growingindustries within the province of British Columbia. The following is the first comprehensive listing of healthtechnology research projects ongoing in British Columbia since 1988. The B.C. Office of Health TechnologyAssessment's (BCOHTA) Steering Committee approved the compilation of this project to facilitate the exchangeof information among researchers, clinicians and administrators. The information contained herein, has beenexcerpted from a bibliographical database program. The project team included: David Paulson, a University of Victoria Health Information SCience student whoinitiated the process of gathering and collating the information; Mary Doug Wright, Librarian, who providedvaluable assistance on the database structure and corresponding output; and Michelle Rhone, Project Manager, who was responsible for the final document. We gratefully acknowledge the assistance of the many individuals and organizations listed in the Introduction forproviding their carefully compiled and annually updated information used in building the database and report. The information contained in this Directory is verified for completeness; its degree of accuracy may bevariableby source of information. It has been compiled by the B.C. Office of Health Technology Assessment (BCOHTA) to facilitate theexchange of information among researchers, clinicians, and administrators. This directory, the first in BritishColumbia, will be updated annually and distributed to individuals and organizations interested in health technologyresearch. Information was gathered from the following various funding agencies:British Columbia Health Research Foundation (BCHRF)Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. & YukonMedical Research Council of Canada (MRC)National Health Research Development Program (NHRDP)National Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)Science Council of B.C.University Hospital FoundationUniversity of British Columbia Research ServicesVancouver FoundationWoodward FoundationAdditional agencies that have provided funding for health technology research projects in B.C. are as follows:Abbott LaboratoriesAdeza Biomedical Corp.Agen Inc.Alcon Laboratories Inc.Alzheimer Society of B.C.Angiogenesis TechnologiesArthritis Society, B.C. & Yukon DivisionAstra Pharmaceuticals Inc.Axelson and Kwok Research AssociatesInc.Ayerst LaboratoriesAyerst-Wyeth LabsBeechamB.C. DIRECTORY OF HEALTH TECHNOLOGY PROJECTSThe health technology assessment directory provides information on the principal investigator(s), additional investigator(s),project title, funding agency, and years of funding. It is categorized into five sections of health technology as defined by theInstitute of Medicine: devices, drugs, medical or surgical procedures, organizational/administrative systems, and supportsystems. 1 They are defined as:Devices £Devl: any physical items, excluding drugs, used in medical care. Included are diagnosticand therapeutic equipment, prosthesis, surgical and medical instruments and supplies, dentalequipment and supplies, ophthalmic goods; and in-vitro diagnostic products - reagents, instruments, and systems used in the collection, preparation, and examination of specimens taken from the humanbody to determine the state of a patient's health.Dru2s £Dru),' any chemical or biological substances that may be applied to, ingested by, or injectedin order to prevent, treat, or diagnose disease or other medical conditions. Included are biologicalsubstances such as vaccines and blood products, medicinal and botanicals, and pharmaceuticalpreparations.Medicalor sur2icalprocedures(Medl: the practice of health care providers that generally involvesa combination, often quite complex, of special skills or abilities with drugs, devices or both.Or2anizationalor administrative s,ystems (Or2)' used in management and administration to ensurethat health care is delivered as effectively as possible. Included are alternative delivery modes orsettings, such as public health or home-care.SupoortoO'Stems (SUO): systems that provide the environment for and otherwise facilitate theprovision of health care, but are not the focal technology in a medical regimen, surgical procedure,or other form of health care. Examples are laboratory and radiology services, information systems, hospital facilities, and other ancillary services that comprise the infrastructure of health caredelivery.2. SUBJECT INDEXThe subject index is arranged alphabetically by subject at the most specific level considered useful (i.e. Lung cancer asopposed to Cancer, lungs). Under each subject heading, project title, and their corresponding project identification number(project id) are listed.3. INVESTIGATOR INDEXBoth principal and additional investigators are arranged alphabetically with corresponding project id number(s).1Adapted from: Institute of Medicine. Assessing Medical Technologies.
