Between The Gap : A Closer Third Place for Community and Connection Wu, Hanbing

Abstract

This thesis investigates the possibility of converting Vancouver’s residential laneways into polyvalent third spaces, augmenting their social and ecological functions within the urban setting. Laneway is traditionally regarded as a peripheral service area, and it has started to gain a broader significance in the rising urban density and the changing requirements of communities. The research envisions these overlooked spaces as dynamic interior zones that blur the boundary between public and private domains, providing opportunities for community interaction, adaptive reuse, and environmental enhancement. The study aims to put forward strategies that can transform residential laneways into resilient, sustainable, and animated components of urban life, contributing to an overall enhancement in the quality of living in Vancouver’s neighborhoods.
