The Distributed Museum Mulliken, Christopher A.

Abstract

The world of iconic art museums designed by starchitects creates isolated fantasy worlds and prioritizes capitalistic governance while furthering urban inequalities. Looking critically at the proposal for Vancouver Art Gallery I intend to disrupt modern art museum design and provide an alternative community based model. The distributed museum system is built of locally integrated hubs that provide access to world class art and the local creative experience. I keep the Vancouver Art Gallery at its current location and integrate its stored collection into Vancouver Public Library locations across the city. By doing so, I prioritize local community over an iconic tourist trap. Instead of giving Vancouver a tourist destination lets give it a community to build on.
