Between Here and There : a belonging of people and place Ugalino, Algine Lois

Abstract

As city developments continue to reshape Vancouver’s urban fabric, the spaces where diasporic communities gather, share, and sustain their cultural identities are increasingly at risk of erasure. This project proposes a Filipino Storytelling Centre in Joyce-Collingwood, a neighbourhood deeply tied to Vancouver’s Filipino diaspora, as a space dedicated to the expression, preservation, and transmission of Filipino identity. Rooted in the understanding that storytelling extends beyond oral and written traditions, the Centre embraces language, food, shared experiences, and nostalgia as integral forms of cultural expression. By creating a formalized yet adaptive space, this project ensures that Filipino stories, whether passed down through intergenerational conversations, culinary traditions, or everyday interactions, remain woven into the city’s evolving identity.
