Bring Back the City Sarzynski, Victor F.

Abstract

Bring Back the City explores strategies to tackle Canada’s housing and urban development challenges, with a particular focus on Winnipeg as its case study. Recognizing the city’s harsh climate as a crucial factor in urban design, the project highlights how continual suburban expansion exacerbates infrastructure strain, social isolation, and car-dependent planning—issues that are especially problematic in cold-weather environments. By analyzing Winnipeg’s historical housing trends and contemporary urban issues, Bring Back the City underscores the need for housing density and urban redevelopment tailored to winter city living. Through sustainable and inclusive strategies, it advocates for revitalizing the city centre, fostering more walkable, connected, and climate-resilient communities that embrace Winnipeg’s winter identity while promoting a more vibrant and sustainable urban future.
