The Laundromat is a Horrifying Place to find Romance Bilenduke, Taylor

Abstract

This book explores two concepts: the laundromat as a local, and the laundromat as an actor. It will identify examples of the laundromat as an actor, and the laundromat as a local, and will extract a repertoire of objects that are exploited in visual media and entertainment. The laundromat is understood as dying in Vancouver, and the project will provide a speculative campaign for the revival of public laundromats in through processes of retrofitting, relocation, and rewriting policy. Design figments will propose ironic and realistic transformations for the laundromat in contemporary Vancouver. This project takes on a critique of media portrayal and contemporary city life through topics of reputation, perception, and representation. It will analyze portrayed stereotypes of the laundromat in media, visualizing the way this affects our buildings and programs given the 2-dimensionality we view film in.
