Landmade : crafting public space Wiebe, Kaitlin
Abstract
This project reclaims an abandoned rail corridor as a space for ecologically mindful crafting, using materials like invasive species to connect participants to the environment. It addresses the disconnection from the origins of everyday items—food, clothing, and other resources—by fostering hands-on engagement with raw materials. Through creating a visual and physical library of ecological materials, collaborative making sessions, and reflective practices, the project seeks to nurture ecological awareness, mental well-being, and collective empowerment. By actively participating in the process, participants develop empathy for the land, strengthen community bonds, and explore craft as a vehicle for sustainability and activism.
