Reimagining dementia : stories of ‘ikigai’ and how Japanese Canadians live well with dementia Ito, Hiro
Description
Hiro Ito was a finalist in the 2024 UBC Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. Hiro presented their research, "Reimagining dementia: stories of ‘ikigai’ and how Japanese Canadians live well with dementia." To counter stigma and promote an improved quality of life, a number of researchers have begun to explore how people can live well with dementia. However, many cultural minority groups have been largely excluded from this research, including Japanese Canadians. Hiro hopes to uplift the quality of life of Japanese Canadians living with dementia and advocate for culturally nuanced research through interviews and artmaking with people with living with dementia or mild cognitive impairment and their care partners from the Japanese Canadian community. Hiro Ito is completing their Master of Science in Population and Public Health in the School of Population and Public Health under the supervision of Dr. Susan Cox.
