Place[d] Between Cloth : A Catalogue for Conversation about Shredded Textiles Dixon-Reusz, Annika
Abstract
This project invites people to recognize the material and the properties of shredded textiles to form light stewardship through the material expression of a fiber that we have in abundance, that we do not want to make any more of, however, we need to find a solution for to prevent the shredding of microplastics and reduce the consumeristic cycles of textile-textile systems. The invitation is to see the value of architecture and built form to contain the shred through various methods of binding techniques, to create a place and space that draws attention to the ephemeral properties of shredded textiles and prompting conversation around what the future of the material might look like, how we might utilize it in the built environment and reconsider or consider our relationship with the material. The applications move along the spectrum of the ways to which fabrics have been used to divide space, and create place. The project is interested in exploring the ways that textiles can interact with an enviroment as well as the properties of materials, definitions of what textiles are. The biggest take away from the project being the material relationship through the shred via the community around it, through a goal of providing hope for a conscious future system that makes engaging with more sustainable practices more accessible.

Description |
This project invites people to recognize the material and
the properties of shredded textiles to form light stewardship
through the material expression of a fiber that we have
in abundance, that we do not want to make any more of,
however, we need to find a solution for to prevent the
shredding of microplastics and reduce the consumeristic
cycles of textile-textile systems. The invitation is to see the
value of architecture and built form to contain the shred
through various methods of binding techniques, to create
a place and space that draws attention to the ephemeral
properties of shredded textiles and prompting conversation
around what the future of the material might look like, how
we might utilize it in the built environment and reconsider or
consider our relationship with the material. The applications
move along the spectrum of the ways to which fabrics have
been used to divide space, and create place. The project is
interested in exploring the ways that textiles can interact
with an enviroment as well as the properties of materials,
definitions of what textiles are. The biggest take away from
the project being the material relationship through the shred
via the community around it, through a goal of providing
hope for a conscious future system that makes engaging
with more sustainable practices more accessible.
