Healing Garden : Humanising Space for Living and Dying Well Zhao, Ziqian

Abstract

In Asian culture, death is a taboo but inevitable. Dying carries shame due to the emphasis on traits like independence and incessant productivity. Hospice care challenges fast-paced ideals. Fear of death leads to social exclusion and hidden hospice architecture. My goal is to envision a design approach that aligns with the hospice philosophy, aiming to ease the pain of death for both individuals and their loved ones. I seek to create an alternative to shame and isolation, reimagining the dying process to promote support, empathy, and significance. This project seeks to create a healing space filled with belonging and support across three levels: urban context, nature engagement, and hospice environment.
