Meet Me at the Water's Edge Chee, Emily

Abstract

Vancouver’s waterfront encapsulates two vital aspects of the city: its frequent rainfall and the surrounding ocean, epitomized by the iconic Seawall. While bustling with activity in summer, this pathway often lies dormant in winter, lacking amenities and functioning merely as an edge. Nonetheless, it presents an opportunity to celebrate water in all its forms throughout the year. A new public space emerges between English Bay and Sunset Beach, forming a focal point for water engagement that merges rainfall and ocean water within its design. Nestled into the contours of the Seawall, this space transcends pure functionality, offering elevated amenities including public washrooms, covered seating, and a versatile event space. Through a multi-sensory approach, it transforms Vancouver’s waterfront from a thoroughfare into a vibrant gathering place, inviting the public to rediscover the beauty and joy along the water’s edge, regardless of the weather.
