Nurturing Diversity in Memorial South Park Ragandac, Angelica
Abstract
Immigrant population has resulted to the rich and diverse cultures of Vancouver. It is projected that Canadian population will reach 47.7 million by 2041, and half of that are immigrants or children of immigrants born in Canada (Statistics Canada, 2022). The City of Vancouver is facing a childcare crisis, and with an increasing population growth trend, demand for childcare facilities and spaces for diverse cultures is inevitable. Considering the multiple benefits of nature and the outdoors to children, city parks can become the outdoor spaces for early childhood programs. While outdoor play is perceived as essential to a child’s development and learning, racial and cultural dynamics must be acknowledged and understood among multi-cultural communities to design play spaces that can support, as much as possible, these varied cultural needs, values, and attitudes towards play. This project imagines Vancouver’s Memorial South Park into a dynamic and engaging multicultural landscape that can also function as natural play spaces for children in daycares around the neighborhood.
