More than just cooking : a home economics educator’s reflective exploration of food literacy Smith, Christine Enid

Abstract

This paper explores my reflective practice as a food literacy educator in implementing food literacy pedagogies. There has been a focus on functional/technical/operational knowledge and skills in the literature, less so of interactive/interpretive/cultural knowledge and skills; and critical/emancipatory food literacy. There is also very little written about how to teach food literacy. Therefore, my research question for my autoethnographic self-study is: as a home economics teacher focusing on using Food Literacy as a central theme in my teaching of Food Studies, what have I learned about implementing Food Literacy Education? I share my experiences, reflecting on my actual classroom and life experience and analyzing them with levels and competencies of food literacy in mind. I conclude that there needs more research on food literacy pedagogy and how Home Economics educators can be the bridge in advocating that our profession is “more than just cooking”.
