Nurturing biophilia : home economics in the elementary classroom Mohn, Camille
Abstract
This paper documents my teacher action research, during which I explored ways to foster biophilia in elementary school, through home economics and the metaphor of earth as home. I began with a literature review, examining biophilia and how it is already apparent in education. I used this foundation as a jumping off point to plan learning experiences for my students, implement them, observe and reflect on my teaching practice. In this paper I share my experience and what I learned as I infused biophilia into my elementary class through home economics. Home economics is not taught as a separate subject at the elementary level but home economics concepts, particularly food studies, can be integrated using the theme “the world is our home” and using the natural environment to foster biophilia and sustainable living.
