Exploring maker education in clothing, textiles and fashion classes Mack, Chantel

Abstract

This paper explores the benefits of maker centered education (MCE) and how it can be used in Home Economics (HE) Clothing, Textile and Fashion (CT&F) classes. I begin with a literature review on maker education; outlining a cultural trend called the Maker Movement (MM), the history of making, what makes a ‘maker’ and makerspaces. I then present the connections of making to educational theory and pedagogy, discuss the potential of making in education- specifically HE education. In my own practice, I implemented a maker project and I share my experiences of guiding my students to make something they choose. In this paper I share my explorations using maker education using a narrative, self study action research format of plan, act, observe and reflect. I discuss what I learned in incorporating MCE projects in my home economics teaching.
