Layers of experience in home economics education : a self study Gargarella, Emily R.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine and reflect on my life experiences up to my first-year teaching Home Economics Family Studies (HEFS) at the secondary education level. I was interested in understand how the layers of my life experiences have influenced me as a teacher. This study allowed me to dig deeper into my layers of experience for how they have shaped my values and practices as a the home economics/family studies educator I am today. Through reflexivity and reflection this examination of my narrative experiences it has allowed me better to understand how they have influenced the educator I have become. Ultimately it has allowed me to transform my own pedagogy and become an important layer in the lives of my own students.
