My pedagogical journey with mindfulness Abra, Robin Nicole

Abstract

I have been teaching for more than a decade and have spent the last two years in a new role as a teacher-librarian (TL) and English Language Learner (ELL) teacher at an elementary school. In this paper, I explore the concept of mindfulness and how it helps me navigate the dynamics of my new teaching position. My inquiry is situated in the pragmatic and interpretivist research paradigms and features self-study, narrative inquiry and a/r/tography methodologies. My data collection methods include a personal journal for observations and reflections, plus photographs of interactive bulletin boards, lessons and students’ finished products. In this graduating project, I explored how mindfulness helps me enrich my instruction and incorporate the home economics (HE) curriculum into the LLC by investigating three applications of mindfulness: as teacher self-care, reflective practice, and transforming learning. This inquiry will be useful for educators looking to explore how mindfulness can enhance their teaching. It may also be helpful to new teachers, those in a new teaching assignment, or those wanting to incorporate HE into other subject areas.
