Schools As Community Resources : Recommendations For Supporting Ukrainian Elementary Refugee Students Through Community-Informed Approaches in Winnipeg, Manitoba Chubenko, Larissa M.
Abstract
This paper focuses on the impact of the arrival of Ukrainian refugee students to a Ukrainian-bilingual elementary school located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. These Ukrainian refugee students and their families are in the process of dealing with shared experiences of displacement, loss of community, and resettlement resulting from the recent Russian invasion and war in Ukraine. This school is already in a unique position in supporting refugee students, families and extended community through existing programming involving Ukrainian language, traditions, values, and cultural norms. More specifically, to support these new refugee students requires schools to further establish a Full-Service Community Schools model focusing on community-informed approaches. This paper further provides recommendations for community-informed approaches in schools through implementation of safe and healing school environments, towards empowerment and belonging, as well as examples of community programming and outreach initiatives.
