Caretakers of Second Narrows : A Living Guide to Gathering, Pruning, Making, On-Site Analysis & Intervention Lebitania, Kristian

Abstract

This project is a living guide and process. It explores representations of care, labour, and placemaking in the disturbed forest of Second Narrows Park in Burnaby. It serves as a living guide to developing an embodied relationship with a site by taking on the role of a caretaker; a process often underrepresented in the realm of design. Through maintenance practices, a designer can grow an understanding of the land through the fluid process of analysis, observation, and intervention using their bodies. The final representation is a film demonstrating the process of developing a personal relationship to the land over the course of 15 site visits from January to April 2023.
