Agro-Elderly Matrix : An Elderly-friendly, Inclusive, and Participatory Community Garden System in Chinatown Liu, Yuxiang
Abstract
The city of Vancouver's senior immigrant population has grown rapidly, especially in the neighborhood of Chinatown (Immigrant Demographics Vancouver, 2018). Specifically, it is predicted that the senior Chinese immigrant population will continue growing in Chinatown in the future (chinatownconcerngroup, 2016). Unfortunately, gentrification has resulted in the isolation of senior immigrants from their communities. To address this issue, community gardens have been recognized as an effective tool for promoting integration (Hanna and Oh, 2000). The project draws inspiration from the 24 Solar Terms, a traditional East Asian system that divides the solar cycle into 24 periods based on natural phenomena and agricultural activities. The project aims to establish an elderly-friendly, inclusive, and participatory community garden system in Chinatown that prioritizes the creation of a productive landscape, elderly-friendly streets, and all-season activities.
