Hero of the Under-Bog : The case for allegory as landscape care Wilson, Meredith

Abstract

The Bog has been a repeated source of mystery, wonder, horror, and beauty in folklore and popular culture. Storytellers use the Bog to evoke an eerie atmosphere or as a testing challenge for its heroes. In the modern world, however, the prevailing narrative villainized the Bog. Countless wetlands throughout the western world were dredged, dammed, and diked to make way for urban development. Landscape architecture can use fictional narrative as a tool to restore our relationship to place - otherwise known as place meaning. The selected site for this project is a remnant Bog in East Vancouver, with soft peat soils that wreak havoc on infrastructure and aging homes. Opportunity exists to restore the whimsy of the Bog by using the proposed framework, “Allegory as Care”. Hero of the Under-Bog intends to connect the neighbourhood to the landscape and all that it offers through the lens of a classic folk hero. The physical book could be placed in the little free library and circulated throughout the community.
