Sew it Seams : Gleaning Fibre Futures Hicks, Claire

Abstract

Material advancements have allowed Homo sapiens to shape their evolutionary destinies and venture into far-reaching environments. However, increased dependency on synthetic fibres, and intensive methods of production and manufacturing geared towards global consumption, have culminated in unsustainable practices and the erasure of labour and landscapes embedded within fashion fibres. Inspired by the longstanding act of gleaning - the collection of goods that have been deemed commercially unprofitable - this project investigates low-carbon, localized textile alternatives using discarded stalks and leafy matter sourced from the Yard Trimmings Lot at the Vancouver South Transfer Station. Sew it Seams seeks to unearth newfound forms of dress, widening our horizons of possibility and ultimately inspiring novel textile paradigms.
