Home for the Child :housing designed with a children-centric apporach will positively affect the development and quality of life of children Luo, Nancy
Abstract
Children are often forgotten in designing our built environment. Childhood is a time of vast development and potential. This thesis explores how housing designed with a children-centric approach will positively affect the development and quality of life for young children. “Play” is essential to the development of young children as it has a crucial role in their physical, cognitive, social and emotional development. Studies have suggessted that it is a biological drive as integral to our health as sleep or nutrition. With the affordable housing crisis, many young families with children are reconsidering where they can live. Few designers design with the child in mind especially when it comes to multi-units developments. This thesis looks into existing policies and possibilities of retrofitting. This project aims to investigate the importance of play and create design interventions that enrich the lives of young children in their homes.
