Packable Architecture : investigating and prototyping a deployable nature experience within the (sub)urban context Allida, Joanna
Abstract
This project examines issues regarding hypertechnicality, standardization and opacity of modern tent design through a construction and material lens. By prototyping, mainly sewing and model-making, the project aims to address how the tent can be a device to mindfully reconnect humans to all degrees of nature whether that is in urban, suburban or remote conditions. It investigates a niche typology of (sub)urban tents through a system titled the Skinwalker—a soft packable structure that is intended for people who may not have easy access to high levels of nature. By allowing the user to directly manipulate visual connections through framing and scaling, the goal of the system is to elicit similar connections to a remote nature experience within the (sub)urban context.
