Queering Vatican City: a reinterpretation of the catholic church Milton, Reece

Abstract

This thesis investigates subversive forms of public and private space emerging from queer theory and disability discourse. In defining queer space (which is subject to change over time and person), this thesis looks at several case studies of architectural intervention done by and for queer people, and extrapolates their qualities. In describing queer space a subversion of heteronormative spaces, the proposed site for intervention is Vatican City, the global headquarters for the Roman Catholic Church, an powerful institution responsible for oppression of queer people. This project seeks to subvert the dominion and shame imposed by the hetero-patriarchal catholic church by suggesting Christ is queer, and that the religion should be based around queerness. A sequence of divine interventions of existing spatial elements at multiple scales demonstrates the queer future we hope for.
