[un]Settled: a Pilgrimage to Resettled Landscapes investigates the story of settlement and the Newfoundland Resettlement Program through themes of place, identity, and heritage preservation. Drawing on theories of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, sense of place, and fragile architecture, this thesis investigates how architecture can contribute to the resilience of Newfoundland’s sense of place and cultural identity, by reconnecting locals and visitors to the natural landscape and cultural traditions. Through the reinterpretation of vernacular architecture, and the story of resettlement using visual representation techniques, conceptual programmatic typologies emerge. A case is made for an Outport Pilgrimage that travels through Bonavista Bay, and stops in the focused site of Flat Island, in which the design of temporal, ephemeral, and migratory installations will allow for the sharing of intangible cultural heritage.
