Considerations for Peer Led Mentorship for VAD Patients Johansson, Erica
Abstract
Objectives: The purpose of this Thesis of Scholarly Practice Advancement Research Project (SPAR) is to describe the benefits of peer mentorship, qualifications of peers, required training for peers, administrative considerations, and ongoing maintenance. A literature review was completed for available evidence in the subject. Methods: A review of the literature was conducted to research, compile, and explore literature pertaining to peer mentorship for acute heart failure patients and caregivers. 58 articles were identified from CINAHL, 273 from MEDLINE, and 36 from PSYCINFO. A total of 367 articles were screened. Results: From the 367 screened articles, one article met the inclusion criteria. Therefore, literature specifically looking into peer or mentorship in the adult acute heart failure population is significantly limited. A meta-analysis of cancer patients showed a positive correlation between coping with the disease and peer mentorship. Conclusion: Limited data exists for VAD patients and peer mentorship. What is known is positive, and worth additional research.
