To Leave is to Return : The Mythology of the Rockaway Peninsula Ng, Victoria

Abstract

To escape from the noise of New York City, I visited the Rockaway Peninsula. Here I discovered the myth of a land that is disappearing into the ocean. This is a documentation of loss due to extreme water events; a dedication to those who long for a past, exist in the present, and hope for the future. This thesis captures resilience in the disappearance of place through acts of empathy as the sea engulfs the Rockaway Peninsula. It is an expression of loss that engages the reader into supposed spaces of absence. Anticipating the destruction and deterioration of built forms by climate disasters, To Leave is to Return is an empathetic documentation of loss. The project draws relationships between imagination, existence, and place to mourn for those entangled in the consequences of climate change.
