Abstract

I started this project with an interest in secrets, in ideas about history, fiction, curation, and relative truths. Early on in the semester it was suggested that I take a look at the York Theatre. When I first started investigating it I wasn’t quite sure what I was looking for. Initially, I was intrigued by the disconnect between the storied history of the building and the systems in place that protect it. As I continued digging, I began to discover a series of incongruencies — moments that don’t quite fit into a clean narrative of the theatre’s past. I continued looking into these incongruencies, and I began trying to piece together some of these fragments. I don’t know if they can ever be fully assembled, but this is what I’ve discovered so far.
