Abstract

I remember reading something that said, “The work of art cannot be the end, the meaning, and the consolation of life” It was in these words that I realized how I would set out to find this place I was looking for. It became apparent that a project interested in the idea of discovery and understanding, the answers were never going to be found at the end or in anything I created. That is because it is in the process itself that I would begin to find what I was looking for. - In architecture. I feel we are so determined to understand what a project could be, that we often forget to fully experience or enjoy the journeys we set out on. We mustn’t be narrowly concerned with a beginning and an end; we must become fully aware of everything caught in-between. To become conscious of this, I believe, one must give themselves up completely to the process. This doesn’t simply mean to have a strong awareness of what is unfolding, but to truly experience it we must offer up both body and mind to access the potentials that lie within any process, and any act of creation. - What comes about through this method can be described as an architectural act of automatic exploration. The mind and body become entangled, engaging in a form of a waltz that will have one oscillating simultaneously between states of observing and occupying. At one moment the mind and body are working in tandem to create something, existing outside of the artifact being created, while at the same time the mind and body are experiencing and inhabiting a space unfolding, communicating these discoveries back out to the exterior world. In any process there are moments of doubt. But while acting out and participating in this method one must remain completely in trust to it, believing and knowing that it will take us to that place we have been unable to venture to. Leonard Cohen once described this feeling as being in a state of grace. - It was through this method that my exploration and discovery unfolded, in which 6 artifacts initially manifested themselves as object and space. But, through a series of re-readings they began to transcend their original parameters of space and time creating occupiable potentials, producing a world which exists between the plausible and fabulation.
