The Great Bear Sea – a toilet bowl for marine vessels: Quantifying waste and the ecological, social, cultural and economic risks of marine dumping Klasios, Natasha; Pozas, Ana; Sha, Jeff

Abstract

In British Columbia, inadequate regulations and laws currently allow for ships and vessels to discharge various waste streams directly into the ocean, without consequence, if they are more than 3 nautical miles offshore. In this report, we focus on three main waste streams (sewage, greywater, and scrubber washwater) which are commonly discharged by vessels into the ocean. We quantify the amounts of waste generated by commerical vessels along the coast of British Columbia and analyze the risks associated with these waste streams, focusing on the potential ecological, sociocultural and financial impacts of marine dumping in the Great Bear Sea.
