My name is Jane. This is my first (how exciting!) and last (pity!) editorial. I am now more than just a name printed in jetblack ink – the memory that is me will forever be imprinted in this oft skipped-over paragraph. After four years of involvement with Perspectives, as a general member in publication design and electronic publishing (02-04), a director of publication design (04-05) and finally the co-editor-in-chief (05-06), I will soon be joining the glorious ranks of the elusive though much thanked Perspectives alumni team. As a geeky pharmacology major, my time with Perspectives has created a window of opportunities for me to keep in touch with my interests in art – through writing, design and photography. The experience fostered the growth of my confidence as a leader, mentor and organizer - as a friend, listener and team-player. I learned to value planning and genuine human calibre. Good preparation and a dedicated exec team are critical to the success of any club. Finally, of course, Perspectives has strengthened many of my friendships and acquaintanceships, because often than not we coax our friends into joining our clubs and are then inevitably forced to spend more time with them. I am grateful to have gazed upon many kindred spirits with shining characters. It has been a truly fun and endearing ride. Growth. University changes you – so they tell me. It’s true. Push and pull. Action and reaction. As students we also leave our marks. Society reflects the thinking of its masses. University touches base with the values of its students. A club, likewise, navigates by the directions of its members. Year after year, Perspectives has evolved along with the dynamics of its exec team. It is truly a student paper – written by students, for students. I leave my last year in Perspectives with only my warmest wishes for its future success. How exciting! Please do surprise me.  4 If you were on campus on Clubs Days back in September, you could not have missed the plethora of Asian/Chinese clubs recruiting both old and new members for the coming year.  Some join for the wide range of discounts at numerous restaurants, clothing, flowers, and gift shops while others join for the opportunity to participate in special events such as drama shows and ski trips.  Even if you do not participate in any of the events, some of the welcome gifts are already great reasons to join.  For this issue of Perspectives, we hope to provide you with a guide to the different Asian/Chinese clubs on campus as well as various changes that have taken place for some clubs over the years.  Since the CVC’s formation as the first Asian club back in 1930, the evolution of Asian/Chinese clubs has taken many different paths.  There is much more to find in these clubs than the stereotypical welcome packs, discounts, and clubbing events. 在 九 月 份 Club Day 的校園裡, 你不可能會錯過許許多多亞洲 / 華人社 團,正在為新的一年召集新舊成員。有些人為了廣 闊的折扣:餐廳、服飾店、花店和禮品店而參加; 有些人則為了參加話劇和滑雪等特別活動而入社。 就算你不參與任何活動,一些五花八門的迎新禮已 足為入社的好理由。這期的《瞻》,我們希望為您 提供校園內不同亞洲 / 華人社團的簡介和一些社團 在 數 年 內所經歷的變更。 自 1930 年,第一個亞洲社團CVC 的成立,亞洲 / 華人社團經歷許多演 變,並各 自邁向不同的途徑。這些社團擁有比 迎新禮、折扣、舞會等更 值得探討的地方。且來看看各社團的特 色:  Founded in 1930, the CVC is one of the oldest clubs on UBC campus.  It was called the Chinese Student Association under AMS back in 1937 but changed to its current name in 1940.  From its humble beginnings of 67 students, the CVC has evolved to a membership body of over 1000 students.  CVC’s original intent was to protect Asian students because there were only a handful of Asian students attending UBC at that time.  Hence, any Asian student was automatically a member of CVC.  Today, CVC has the reputation of being a CBC (Canadian-born Chinese) club because it is comprised mainly of second generation Chinese students; however, it also includes students from other Asian and non-Asians nationalities. CVC’s mission has always been to provide its members with opportunities to make friends, learn about different cultures, and contribute to society through events.   (The CVC is renowned as a “party club” through its drawing of about 1500 party-goers to some of its dances.  Also, the CVC participates in the Asian community through volunteering events at SUCCESS as well as dinner theatre events with an Asian comedic group called A Salted Fish.  On campus, the club is well known for its famous bartending workshops, games night, speed dating events, sporting events, as well as a unique slave auction (executives of the club are auctioned off as slaves and the proceeds go to a non-profit organization or charity).  For the club’s plans for the future, the executives hope to have a more multicultural perspective and they want to deviate (just a little) away from parties by providing more diverse events such as talent shows, ski trips, and fashion shows.  For Nathania Lo, current president of CVC, one of the most touching and memorable moments was the chance to talk face to face with the 89-year old former president of CVC at the club’s 75th anniversary gala last year.  自 1930 年開創以來,CVC 是校園內 歷史最為悠久的社團之一。1937年在AMS下它 曾經名為 “華人學生協會”,但在1940年改 名。當時只有67名學生;如今會員人數已 超過千人。CVC的初旨為保護亞 裔學生,因為當時就 讀 U B C 的 亞裔學生寥寥無幾。今天,CVC被譽為CBC (加 拿大出生之華裔) 社團,因為其成員主要為第 二代華裔學生;但它也包容其他亞裔和非亞裔 學生。此社的宗旨為:為成員提供交朋友的機 會,學習文化,透過其活動貢獻社會。 CVC 又被稱做 “派對社團” ,因為此社的一 些舞會曾吸引約1500名 “派對族” 參加。CVC 透過中僑互助協會的義工活動和亞洲喜劇團體 “一尾鹹魚” 的戲劇晚宴參與亞裔社區。在校 園內,此社的調酒講座、游戲之夜、速配活動 和獨一無二的 “奴隸拍賣會” (幹部成員以 “奴隸” 名義拍賣,籌款捐獻於福利組 織或機構。) 未來,幹部們希望能夠 有更廣括的多元文化觀點,並希 望能 (稍微地) 脫離派對來 提供較多元的活動如才 藝表演、滑雪之旅 和服裝秀等。 Started in 1956 as a Chinese student support group whose role was to assist overseas students in housing, registration, and carpooling, CSA’s role continues to transform in order to match its changing society. The CSA now serves as a multicultural club that organizes activities for its members, while promoting Chinese culture to the UBC community. CSA has organized numerous sports, social, and cultural events including ski trips, dances, dramas, and senior home visits with the goal of creating a better relationship between the Chinese and the Canadian communities of British Columbia. 始創於 1956年, C S A 為 一 個 協助海外學生住 宿、申請和集體通勤 的學生福利團體。為配合 不斷變化的社會,CSA所伴演 的角色也持續轉變。現在,CSA是 一個為成員們舉辦活動,且同時將中 國文化推廣於UBC社區的多元文化社團。 為了使卑斯省社區華人與本地居民的關係更 加良好,CSA主辦過許許多多的體育、社會及文 化活動,包括滑雪之旅、舞會、戲劇表演和探訪老人 院等。在接下來的數月,它將有許多活動。 Layout: Tony Lim | www.perspectives.ca | Jan 2006  5 Perspectives sprung out of humble beginnings in the spring of 1991.   Bothered but inspired by the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre, founder and premiere Editor-in-Chief, Dennis Chung felt the need to create a medium by which Chinese students in one of the largest Asian-populated universities outside Asia could express their views, opinions, and concerns about the world around them. With a lot of nerve and heart, he gathered a group of friends who shared his vision to create a student publication with a mandate “to bridge the gap between Chinese and other cultures; to promote racial understanding; and to express concern and arouse student awareness about the society” that continues to define its existence. The name “Perspectives (瞻)” was therefore chosen to embody those objectives. The publication is a non-profit, student-run, 100% volunteer operated organization at UBC which aspires to introduce Chinese culture to UBC’s non- Chinese population and to establish a representative student medium for its readership.  Perspectives has brought heart and soul to the unique mandate of a bilingual publication delivering student-oriented content in equal parts English and Chinese. Its interests are contemporary as well as historical, its approaches investigative as well as reflective; the common thread is a desire to explore societal and cultural nuances. Aside from producing its tri-monthly publication, Perspectives is heavily involved in organizing and participating in cultural activities inside and outside of the university community. Functions such as Walk with the Dragon, seminars and workshops, and exhibition booths at Chinese New Year fairs have established its position as B.C.’s Chinese student medium. CCS was create d in 1987 by a gr oup of UBC stud ents seeking to div ersify their un iversity life, to  get away from all t he books and s tudying alone. CCS gave students a  place to seek he lp academically  and socially, provid ing a communi ty where East A sian culture meets W estern culture. T he club has evol ved tremendously o ver the years as  it first originate d as a club formed b y Hong Kong C antonese-speak ing individuals stu dying at UBC. At that time, th ere were only a  few major Chi nese clubs within UB C (CVC and CS A), with both cl ubs on opposite end s of the “Chine se spectrum,” w ith CVC consistin g of members  that were us ually Canadian Born  Chinese while  CSA of Hong Kong immigrants. CC S has generally  stood closer to  the immigrant side  (also sometim es referred to the “Honger” side ).  However, a s one exec rev eals, “One problem with Chinese c lubs today is that there are too ma ny of them. Wit h all the events that these clubs hav e each year, th e clientele base  for these events is t hinning out as i t’s now spread over 6-7 different clu bs instead of 1 o r 2.” As Justin Liu, p resident of CCS  says, “Dances u sed to bring in cro wds of roughly  1000-1500 peo ple. Nowadays, mo st clubs are hap py with around  500. [Our] major fo cus and goal o f ours for the futu re is to perhaps  move closer to  the middle of  the Chinese s pectrum in an  attempt to div ersify our club  further and a ttract Chinese  students from b oth extremes.” Liu argues that  the CCS tries to achieve this g oal is through unique events  such as the annual “Songs of the Heart Ch arity” drama sh ow. The raising of funds and cha rity work is a long process and us ually occurs th roughout the s chool year. The club  has different beneficiaries fo r our charity shows e ach year and in  the last few yea rs we have donated t o Canuck Place , Ronald McDo nald House, and the Heart and Strok e foundation.  O ne of CCC’s proudes t accomplishme nt is its annual  joint ski trip with CS A and CASS, w hich draws ove r 1000 participants eve ry year, the sing le largest indivi dual ski trip in West ern Canada. CCS於1987年為 一群想使大學生 活更多元化、 並想逃離所有課 本的UBC學生所 創辦。CCS提供 學生一個學業及 社會咨詢的地方 ,一個東亞文 化和西方文化交 集的社區。源於 就讀UBC的香 港粵語學生社團 ,此社在數年內 進展無數。 從此社歷史的半 途開始,所有會 議都以英語 交流。曾經,U BC內只有少數大 型華人社團, CVC和CSA 兩社 可謂 “華人舞 台” 上的對 頭。一直以來, CVC多為加國出 生之華裔,而 CSA則多為香港 移民。過往,C CS也通常偏向於 移民一方 (暱名 :“香港仔”) 。它未來的一 大目標為趨向 “華人舞台” 的中心,使它更 多元化,並吸引 兩極的華裔學生 。CCS的一項 特別活動即是一 年一度的 “愛 心慈善之歌” 戲劇表演。募款 和慈善工作是一 段極長的過 程,通常全年度 進行。每年的慈 善演出都有不 同的受益人。近 年來,它捐贈於  Canuck Place ,Ronald McD onald House和  the Heart and  Stroke基金會。 另外,和CSA及 CASS合辦的滑 雪之旅是加拿大 西岸最龐大的單 一滑雪之旅, 常於聖誕假期後 的第一週於 Ke lowna, BC 舉 辦。它在溫哥華 Waterfront貿易 大會中心舉辦 的舞會有超過三 千人共襄盛舉。 從此,CCS以 其舞會聞名。 YOURS 開辦於1997年,因為一群大學生們不只 想讀書,而想多參與學校活動,並為學生們提 供活動。它的目標為跨越UBC和SFU學生間的鴻 溝,讓他們能認識不同學術、文化及社會背景 的新朋友。YOURS也相信為社區服務,透過每年 度的歌唱大賽為聯合國兒童基金會 (UNICEF) 等福利組織的籌款活動,以及為兒童和老人提 供活動。此社在這短短的八年間擴充許多,現 在已全年主辦超過二十個活動。每年它都想創 新比賽,透過游戲及問題來教導兒童有關環境 的議題。今年是它第三年舉辦此活動,最大的 變更之一是與一家香港唱片公司合辦一年一度 的歌唱大賽。優勝者可有機會在香港成為明 星。它並持續為學生和社區提供最好的活動而 努力。YOURS是唯一與SFU連結的華人社團。兩 所大學的學生皆可非常輕易地參加其活動,並 有機會認識兩所大學的學生。 YOURS started in 1997 because a group of university students wanted to participate in school, but instead of just studying, they wanted to provide events for students.   As Winnie Tse, President of UBC YOURS contends, “Our goal is to bridge the gap between students of UBC and SFU, enabling them to meet new friends with different academic, cultural and social backgrounds.”  But YOURS’ mission is also to serve the greater community, which it does by hosting events that fundraise for non-profit organizations such as UNICEF. The club has expanded a lot over the past 8 years.  Each year, YOURS works hard to come up with new ideas such as its “Junior Innovation Contest,” which educates children about environmental issues through games and questions. As Tse asserts, “One of the greatest changes this year is that we are honored to organize our annual singing contest with a Hong Kong record company.”  In fact, the winning contestant is offered the opportunity of becoming a star in HK.   In being the only the joint UBC-SFU Chinese club, students from both sides of the hill can join together in events, allowing people to have an easier chance to meet people from both institutions. Layout: Tony Lim | www.perspectives.ca | Jan 2006  6 不是一個佛 教團體,卻有著充滿著 禪意的名字,創立於1996年,在UBC眾多台灣 社團中獨樹一幟的淨心舍,就是這樣一個特別的社 團。它是一個當你在掙扎或探索生命的意義時可尋獲 同儕咨詢的社團。它為你與外面世界的聯繫。其實此 社剛成立時,宗旨是要建立一個與眾不同的台灣社團 來發揚特有的台灣文化,並希望能藉由舉辦各種性質 的活動來拉近許許多多遠離故鄉的莘莘學子們之間的 距離,進而讓那些嚮往台灣的朋友們能夠一同認識台 灣、瞭解台灣、熱愛台灣。然而,資助團體只願贊助 佛教團體;這就是社團名稱的起源。淨心舍成立後, 幹部們決定遵照非宗教組織的原宗旨,停止接受佛教 資助團體的贊助。在九年的運轉內,UBC淨心舍成為最 成功的台灣社團之一。此社所主辦的活動無一與舞廳 或酒精有關,獲得了許多學生的青睞。另外,UBCRC還 有許多健康和有創意的活動如從令人流連忘返的冬季 滑雪之旅,到充滿著甜蜜的巧克力講座,每年的淨心 總是準備了各種不同的驚喜,讓會員們在大學的漫長 生涯中留下無數美麗的回憶。不為了打響名號,不為 了牟取暴利,只為了將幸福、快樂和許許多多的感 動,全都回饋給熱愛淨心的人。 Established in 1996. Reality’s distinctiveness from other Chinese student clubs stand out from the rest of the clubs in UBC.   What does a “Reality” club mean (do) anyways?   Reality is a club where one can seek peer counseling if he or she were struggling or wondering the meaning of life. It acts as the link between a person and the outside world. When the club was first established, its main purpose was to promote the Taiwanese culture. However,  it has al so had an  interestin g history,  for its in itial spon sor was a  Buddhist society. (T hat’s whe re the nam e of the c lub came from).   H owever, shortly af ter the est ablishmen t of the cl ub, Realit y executiv es decided  that the club’s dir ection sho uld be no n-religiou s.  In acc epting thi s route, t he club discontinu ed sponso rships fro m any Bu ddhist org anizations . Over the years, UB C Reality club has b ecome on e of the m ost succes sful Taiwanes e clubs a t UBC.  I n maintai ning the club’s ma ndate of total disassocia tion from  clubbing  or alcoho l in their activities,  UBC Rea lity organizes  many hea lthy and c reative ac tivities, su ch as Taiw anese nigh t market sh opping, w inter skiin g trips, an d chocola te-making  seminars , thus mak ing it ind eed one o f the mos t uniquely  refreshin g Chinese  student or ganization s at UBC. Founded in year 1990 by Yuan Yu Peng, the goal of the Taiwan Association of UBC, (known as UBCTA), when it was first established was to become a nexus where Taiwanese students residing in the Greater Vancouver could meet and make new friends.  In striving on behalf of all Taiwanese students studying abroad to obtain more benefits, UBCTA became the first club to provide a platform on which knowledge and information regarding the history, tourist industry, people and political climate of Taiwan could be disseminated to locals who were interested in learning about Taiwan but never had the means to do so previously. Fascinatingly, in order to maintain its purpose and status as a student organization, one of UBCTA’s mandates clearly states that it must not use its name to promote any political party, ideology, or any religion and it must keep a neutral attitude toward such issues. From its original goal of uniting all Taiwanese students attending UBC to its current ability to promote the Taiwanese culture amongst different racial and cultural groups bilingually, UBCTA has grown substantially through the years. Events organized at the time when the association was newly formed were not well defined because the organization was inexperienced, but after ten years of exploration and adjustments, it now hosts a variety of well-known activities and events such as Summer Exploration, winter ski trips, Taiwanese dialect seminar, blood drives and its Gratis ball. All of these events and activities are representative of the current aims of the association – to host artistic, recreational and sporting events wherein entire communities can participate. From its flyers and websites, one clearly sees the association’s multicultural effort in sending out its messages bilingually, for all its articles are written in both English and Chinese. As for its publications, it progressed from consisting of simple articles of only a few pages to the most recent edition – a meaty magazine printed with full colour and included creative writings from literarily inclined members as well as articles introducing Taiwanese culture, another example of the club’s emphasis on promoting Taiwanese culture. Not only does UBCTA bring its members leisure entertainment and publications, it also produces talented and multicultural people.  It hopes to bring itself closer to the famous Ivy League student association via its network of members which spans the entire globe and to produce generation after generation of constructive citizens to the society and help them stay in touch with each other.  卑詩大學臺灣聯誼會創於1990年, 希望藉由社團組織的方式,整合優秀人才的 能力,為就讀於卑詩大學或於大溫地區就讀的臺 灣青年學子提供聯誼的機會。從最初以整合就讀於卑 詩大學的臺灣學生為主要目摽,到目前藉由完全雙語 的方式向各方族群推廣臺灣文化和促進交流的現狀, 這一路走來,社團不斷地在學習和成長。十幾年下來, 在不斷的摸索和改進後,目前UBCTA著名的活動有:夏 日探險、冬季滑雪團、臺灣方言講座、熱心捐血和Gratis舞 會。 這些活動也代表了目前社團的活動取向:社區活動、 文藝活動、 康樂活動和體技活動。 在文宣和網站的經營上,可以體現出目前社團看待雙語 方向的用心:所有的文字介紹均可分別以中英文閱讀。在會刊的經營上,從簡單的數頁 投稿文章轉載,到月前出版的全彩高級印刷雜誌,給對文學創作有興趣的會員許多發揮的機 會。另外,從一些介紹臺灣文化的文章裡可看出UBCTA對推廣臺灣文化的認真與重視。透過 多元化的人才培養和深厚的全球人際網絡,臺灣聯誼會希望和知名的長春藤聯盟看 齊,讓代代輩出的人才對社會有幫助並長久地保持聯絡,互相幫忙。 Layout: Tony Lim | www.perspectives.ca | Jan 2006  7 Established in 1991, DSC has emerged from a relatively small student club to one of the largest clubs in UBC today.  Aimed at promoting cultural exchange and understanding between Chinese-Canadians and the local people, particularly among Chinese of different dialectical groups, the major component of DSC’s mission is its tradition of hosting major drama and music productions such as “Love Episode” and “Echoes” while participating in community fund raising events such as “Famine 30” and the South Asian Tsunami fundraising event. The goal is to allow its members to be aware of their community and vice versa.   By constantly striving for improvements and changes throughout the 14 years after creation, it takes on challenges by carrying out novel ideas. In the past, it even invited famous Hong Kong singer Candy Lo to host a concert in Vancouver from which the profits went toward World Vision. In 2003, DSC hosted our first modeling contest and fashion show “La Mode.”  As a result of its participation charity events major productions, “Dragon Seed” is becoming renown in town. As Farina Tsui, Assistant Director Publications reveals, DSC wants students to “know that university life experience is more than textbooks and exams because they can enrich theirs by joining to become one of our executives.” Gaining knowledge and valuable experiences such as event organization skills and communication skills through taking part in any DSC event is an asset to their life experience, which is found outside of lectures and textbooks. Interestingly, the evolution of DSC’s theme color from purple to red signifies DSC as a Chinese student club and its passion and desire for making a difference.  As Tsui divulges, the DSC will continue to evolve, providing many more services and events to the public, and will continue to maintain its position as one of the largest student clubs in UBC. DSC從1991年初創的小社團成長至今天UBC最大的學生社團之 一,目標在於促進加國華裔和在地居民以及不同華語族群的文 化交流與了解。歷年來它舉辦重大戲劇,延續音樂製作的傳 統,如 “愛語錄” 和 “回音” 。同時,它參與社區籌款活 動如中僑百萬行、飢餓三十、為幼兒慈善機構和南亞海嘯聖誕 卡義賣。DSC在成立的十四年間不斷地追求進步與變化,擁抱 挑戰並勇於實現我們的新想法。過往,它曾邀請香港知名歌手 盧巧音小姐於溫哥華舉辦個人演唱會,將所得捐獻於世界展望 會,得到當時媒體注意。而去年它舉辦了第一次的走秀大賽和 “La Mode” 服裝會。為了延續 DSC 的精神,它的戲劇表演 將和另一組職業戲劇社協辦,試著為觀眾營建一個新鮮的組合 與風貌。DSC每年度也舉辦滑雪之旅、體育競賽、探 訪老人院、各式各樣的講座、舞會等 等。今年,為了延續勇 于嘗新的宗旨, DSC開創了兩個 新部門:製作部 和出版部。它的 主題顏色也從紫 色進化為紅色, 象征DSC為華人學 生社團及本社為 對社區有所助益 的熱誠。 Established by a group of Chinese Graduate students in May of 1994, the ACG’s primary goal is to strengthen student communication as well as to increase students’ contribution to society. Interestingly, when the club was first formed, Chinese Graduate studies students comprised the majority of the members; today, it consists mostly of undergraduates with about 5% of Graduates. One of the most exciting events for ACG is the Chinese comedy drama, Interlude of Romance in which the proceeds of the show go to the Canadian Cancer Society.  Volunteering events range from helping out at the Food Bank and seniors’ homes to the annual Walk for the Dragon run by SUCCESS. Last summer, ACG helped out with the Richmond Fire Department in the South East Asia tsunami fundraiser.  ACG also has overseas events in Hong Kong.  There is a dance in Hong Kong each year that connects students from UBC, UCLA, University of Waterloo and King’s College in the U.K.  The club also has a special connection with the Hong Kong Performers’ Association through its fundraising events. Whereas CCS and CVC mostly attract Canadian- born Chinese, ACG, DSC, and CSA lean more towards catering more towards Chinese students born from overseas.   As Denny Lam, president of ACG reveals, he hopes to expand the club by seeking a broader range of people from more cultures as well as promoting more awareness of the world for its members. The UBC Asian Debate Club was established in early 2004 by a group of friends to address the lack of Chinese debating activities on campus and what it felt was a general apathy towards current events and government among Chinese university graduates today.   In not only aspiring to encourage active debating, which students can further develop their critical reasoning and enhance their Cantonese language and presentation skills, the ADC’s mission is educate others about important aspects of Chinese culture. In order to achieve these goals, the ADC organizes a number of activities and events. One of its major activities is hosting workshops run by experienced debaters from the east coast (where a full fledged organization of university Cantonese debate clubs already exists) as well as Hong Kong universities. These workshops aim to guide students through the steps required to debate well by organizing their thoughts, shaping their speeches, and presenting themselves effectively. In fact, the ADC invites well-known public debaters (such as local politicians) to share their experiences with our fellow students.  Its most important events are its debate matches, which it holds several times each year, along with an inter-club debate competition that involves teams from all UBC Chinese clubs. 2004年初,UBC亞裔辯論社為一群 朋友為關注校園內欠缺中文辯論 活動的窘狀,並深感現今大學畢 業生對時事與政府的普遍倦態所 創立。它希望透過鼓吹與參與劇 烈爭辯,學生們可進一步提昇他 們的判斷推理能力,增進他們的 粵語和發表技巧;同時,也希望 教育他人有關中國文化。 為達到這些目標,此社籌辦不少 的活動。它重大的活動之一是主 辦由東岸 (當地現有成形的大學 粵語辯論社團組織) 以及香港大 學的經驗辯論者所主持的講座。 這些講座的目標在於透過組織想 法、擬定演講和有效率的發表 來引導學生們走過辯論的必經之 途。它還邀請知名公眾辯論家 (地方政治家) 與學生們分享他們 的經驗。最後,它最重要的活動 是辯論會。每年,它為成員們舉 辦幾場內部競賽以及與含括UBC全 部華人社團隊伍的跨社辯論大 賽。未來,它希望延伸這份邀請 函至SFU社團或遍布加拿大其他大 學的華人辯論社。 Layout: Tony Lim | www.perspectives.ca | Jan 2006  8 Layout: Margaret Kwan | www.perspectives.ca | Jan 2006 Layout: Margaret Kwan | www.perspectives.ca | Jan 2006   9 10 Layout: Minjung Kim | www.perspectives.ca | Jan 2006 I recently found out about a fashion trend that started in Japan when my Japanese language exchange partner showed me some pictures of her friends back in Tokyo.  At first glance, I thought her group of friends was dressed up for Halloween to go to a party.  They all looked very Victorian-like with all their bonnets, lace dresses, Mary Janes, lace gloves, and miniature lace- trimmed umbrellas.  It was like watching the female characters out of a Jane Austen movie putting on a fashion show right smack in the middle of Tokyo, a city of skyscrapers.  I was puzzled, and my friend informed me that her friends are fans of the Lolita fashion look that originated in Japan back in 1999 and is spreading rapidly throughout places in Asia such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Korea.  Lolita is a look that imitates Victorian-style porcelain dolls. Although the materials used in Lolita style clothing consist mostly of lace, there are several subcategories in the Lolita look.  There is the classic Lolita, sweet Lolita, as well as the Gothic Lolita.  Classic Lolita consists of more mature-looking, light coloured clothes.  Traditional Lolita uses a lot of lace and ribbons to make the person appear more child-like.  The Gothic Lolita look has a lot of black and white fabrics and is popular among Japanese rock bands, such as Mana, a singer of the Visual Kei (visual look) rock band Malice Mizer.  He has even developed his own fashion label Moi-Meme- Moitie and coined the terms Elegant Gothic Lolita (EGL) and Elegant Gothic Aristocrat in the Gothic Lolita subcategory. The Gothic Lolita style has knee length skirts, possibly made with crinoline to make them look fuller.  Victorian style lace trimmed blouses are usually paired with a Gothic style leather jacket.  Knee stockings, black fish net stockings, and tights are worn on the legs.  Black boots are often worn to complete the look.  The Traditional Lolita adherents wear a Alice- in-Wonderland style frilly apron and pairs it with lace headdresses, and parasols.  While the Gothic Lolita keeps her hair black, the traditional and sweet Lolita might dye their hair blonde and perhaps curl it to suit the style more.  The Gothic Lolita wears a lot of black eyeliner and dark red lipstick whereas the traditional and sweet Lolita keeps makeup to the minimal and prefers a lighter complexion.  Accessories for the Gothic Lolita include crucifixes, bats, coffins and leather bags.  Teddy bears and stuffed animals are carried by the other two categories to emphasize a child-like innocence.  For the Lolita look fans that are able to sew, creating costumes is a matter of time and effort.  For those who prefer shopping for actual clothes, there are custom dressmakers in U.S. and Europe who custom design Lolita fashions.  You can probably imagine the costs of these costumes.  For your information, a frilly skirt costs about 20,000 Yen which is about CAN $200. But there are many stores and magazines that sell Lolita clothes.  There is even a Gothic and Lolita Bible, a magazine that offers sewing patterns and decorating ideas for fans.  A department store in Shinjuku called Marui Young has four floors that target Lolita styles.  Nightclubs in Japan are tuning into the Lolita scene by offering tea and cakes that resemble a British afternoon tea party, doll decorations, as well as playing the Visual Kei genre of music. You may ask: why do girls like the Lolita look?  I do not have an exact answer because everyone’s reasons are different.  When I first heard the term Lolita, I perceived in to be something related to Vladimir Nabokov’s famous novel because older men may like the youthful façade that girls put on.  But upon further research, I realized that the style puts more emphasis on being cute for the traditional and sweet Lolita look and gothic or punk for the Gothic Lolita look rather than trying to convey a feeling of sexiness. My Japanese friend informs me that some of her friends like the style because they want to stand out in the crowd.  Living in a fast-paced city makes them feel as though they are being swallowed by the crowds and they lose the sense of their existence.  By dressing more uniquely, they at least get some acknowledgement from people around them, even if they are only glances of curiosity and surprise.  Understanding that there are people out there who feel the same way enables them to relate to each other and by going out in groups, Lolita trendsetters feel less lonely and they make very valuable and l o n g - l a s t i n g friendships with one another. Others like the traditional and sweet Lolita look because it gives them the feeling of being a princess, both in physical and psychological terms.  Although it is costly either to directly buy the designs or to purchase their own fabrics and make the clothes themselves from start to finish, Lolita style fans get to be people who they could only once imagine in their dreams.  By dressing in these clothes, they get to change their modern day identities, which they perceive to be mundane and commonplace.  But I wonder if they can actually remove themselves from who they really are.  Perhaps, a short-term escape from the modern world is all they need. The dance, organized by Vancouver Film and Television Artist Society along with Red Cross and 10 other student clubs from UBC and SFU, took place in Sonar, a well-known Gastown nightclub. It attracted more than 1000 guys and girls to the dance floor. From 10pm at night all the way to 1 o'clock in the morning, a sizable crowd continued to flush in. A good 400 people lined up outside the entrance waiting to get in; the entire street was just about jam-packed with excited faces. Most people who lined up said that they didn't mind the wait, and felt proud to be able to support the dance. "Pepper,"  named after the hot-tasting spice, forecasted a dance that would be just as hot and thrilling as its name suggested. Indeed, Pepper has delivered! Pepper was not your ordinary dance. Unlike any other dances you might have attended in the past, it was punctuated with waves of original, interactive games to hype up the dance floor, keeping the attendees HOT and HIGH. Just to mention a few, "Pepper Eating Contest" was among the most unique of games. Eight brave souls rose to the challenge amidst thunderous applause and cheers, but six among them failed to make it the last round. The last two went through explosive chili pepper hell together and nearly passed out on the dance floor. The enthusiasm and dedication that these challengers exhibited throughout the game were not only memorable, but also very appreciated by the crowd. Another game, "Pepper Girl Hunt," was also very well received. During the Hunt, some succeeded and were awarded, some made mistakes and were fined. All proceeds were donated to Red Cross, for the purpose of obtaining clothing, blankets, tents, and other necessities to help prepare the homeless Pakistanis and Indians for this coming winter. Pepper participants have contributed for this charitable cause, with love. The president of Vancouver Film and Television Artist Society showed up half way through the dance to give awards to the winning challengers. He expressed his heart-felt thanks to 11月4日,星期五晚間 9:30,在溫哥華媒氣鎮知 名夜總會Sonar裡,由温哥 華影視人協會為紅十字會 集合UBC和SFU的10個大學 生社團聯合舉辦的籌款舞 會「Pepper」終於盛大展 開。這個舞會吸引了超過 1000多名年輕男女來共襄 盛舉,打從晚上10點直到 凌晨1點,舞會的人氣仍持 續升高不降,有400多人密 密麻麻地在門外排隊等著 進場,可觀的人潮幾乎覆 蓋了整條街。多數的人均 表示並不介意等待,希望 能夠藉參與舞會來盡己一 份心力。 「Pepper」,辣椒, 意味著此舞會必定是既 辛辣而且有勁,熱烈過 癮。它果然也不負眾望, 絕對「辣」得夠勁!「 Pepper」不同於普通的舞 會,它付帶著許多精彩絕 倫的小遊戲,炒熱現場, 讓氣氛時時刻刻都保持在 最HOT也最HIGH的狀態。其 中,「吃辣椒大賽」最是 獨一無二,別出心裁。在 歡聲雷動的鼓舞下,共有 8位勇者站出來挑戰這個大 賽,其中有6人在前幾輪的 激戰中紛紛豎起白旗,最 後的2人在如炸藥般的辣椒 煉獄裡雙雙不支倒地,戰 況慘烈無比。來自UBC和 SFU的10個社團的這幾位挑 戰者為這活動所付出的熱 情與表現十分難忘,也令 在場的人們都感動不已。 「Pepper Girl Hunt」也 深受好評。來賓在尋找 Pepper Girl當中,有人尋 中得獎, 有人弄錯被罰捐 款, 但也罰得開心, 因為 所有當晚的捐款和收益, 將會全數捐給紅十字會, 用以作為為巴基斯坦災民 添購過冬的衣物、毛毯、 帳篷、暖爐等裝備,來幫 助災民度過難關。所以每 一位來賓參加火辣舞會之 餘亦帶着一顆熱辣辣的愛 心來做善事。温哥華影視 人協會是次賑災籌委主席 岳華曾現身致詞,還親手 頒授獎品,為活動再次抹 上一波熱潮。岳華祝願所 有人身體健康,並鄭重感 謝為「Pepper」盡心盡力 的大家。對於在場年青的 踴躍參加者,他感到無限 的榮幸與感激。 Author/文:Joyce C. He was proud of all Pepper participants. The dance finally drew to a close at 3:30am. It raised the targeted 10, 000 dollars. The organizer of this event would like to thank all UBC and SFU clubs that helped with promotion of Pepper, including the Association of Chinese Graduates (ACG), Chinese Art Student Society (CASS), Chinese Student's Association (CSA), Chinese Student Union (CSU), Dragon Seed Connection (DSC), the bilingual newspaper Perspectives, UVoice, Simon Fraser Chinese Link (SFCL), and YOURS Student Association. As well, millions of thanks to Peppers Wireless and others for their generous sponsorship. Without them, the night would not have reached this level of success. It was hoped that through Pepper, more people will start to extend their helping hands to aid those in need. To more than 400, 0000 Pakistanis and Indians, October 8th, 2005 is a day that they will never forget. The unfortunate level 7.6 earthquake completely destroyed their homes lands, and buried many of them alive. Jan Egeland, the UN emergency relief coordinator, called for a need of 300 million dollars in aid. This fundraiser dance is a small token of charity contributed by the organizers, the volunteers and the participants.
