In this 2014 interview for Dr. Anne Murphy’s SSHRC-funded project “Transnational modern Punjabi literature and the pursuit of the secular,” Uma Singh and Hirday Paul Singh speak to the creation and legacy of Preet Nagar, one of Punjab’s first planned townships as well as a socio-cultural hub for Punjabi literature, language and culture. Quoting Uma Singh, and Hirday Paul Singh; the “basic idea of Preet Nagar was collective living and being self-sustained, self- maintained and self-reliant.” This was the context in which Punjabi language could flourish in Preet Nagar.
