The evolution of lifestyle and land reclamation : making the connection Richens, Tanya
Abstract
Since 1975, rapid population growth and technological advancements have significantly increased global demand for raw materials that come from mining, oil, and natural gas extraction. The rise of green technologies - including solar panels, wind turbines, and electric vehicles - has further intensified resource extraction, leading to increased land disturbances and a greater need for reclamation. The need for oil, gas, minerals, and metals continues to grow, as they are essential for producing the everyday items that support modern lifestyles. Consequently, ongoing oil, gas, and mining operations must apply responsible reclamation efforts to land affected by resource extraction. Canada’s reclamation industry has evolved alongside societal changes, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable practices. As oil, gas, and mining activities remain vital, reclamation ensures land is available for future use. This paper highlights the importance of responsible natural resource development and land reclamation, emphasizing the balance between economic needs and environmental sustainability.
