Migrants Matter : Active Citizenship (Podcast) Borle, Rachel; Erickson, Grace; Smith, Patricia; Tiruneh, Melat

Description

What does it mean to belong to a community, and who gets to decide? In this episode of Migrants Matter, we explore the role active citizenship plays by looking at its presence in the lives of migrant farm workers. Despite the crucial role these workers have in the agricultural community, they remain politically and socially marginalized through both systemic and legal inequalities. We seek to explore how migrants workers challenge narrow norms and definitions of citizenship through community involvement, engagement and labour. We also encourage reflection on how we as residents and consumers in the Okanagan inadvertently perpetuate the continued mistreatment and inivisibility of local migrant workers. We would like to acknowledge that while we are not migrant workers ourselves, we approach this topic with great humility and a desire to amplify the contributions and experiences of those who are often excluded from the conversation. Thank you for joining us in this exploration of migrants, mobility and politics of belonging.
