Consolidation of Shorebird Data from 1999-2001 and Literature to Inform Wetland Habitat Ecological Restoration for Critical Shorebird Species and General Avian Biodiversity on Iona Island, British Columbia, Canada Dyck, Kylee; Lee, Lauren; Zhang, Yu Qi (Richie)
Abstract
Shorebirds are critical for ecosystems globally by transporting nutrients, energy, and other organisms across ecosystems, using a matrix of habitats from South America to Alaska. To conserve declining shorebirds populations, critical habitat must be protected; Iona Island in North Richmond, BC is a designated Important Bird Area, and supports diverse habitats, providing shorebirds with highly quality and abundant food sources of biofilm and invertebrates. Metro Vancouver is planning the upgrade of the existing Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and ecological restoration projects on the island to improve water quality, fish, and bird habitats. In collaboration with Birds Canada, our project aims to provide recommendations to Metro Vancouver to improve shorebird habitat on Iona Island with the Iona Island WWTP ecological restoration projects. To determine the current value of Iona Island to shorebirds, an analysis of habitat types, eBird and the British Columbia Coastal Waterbirds Survey (BC CWBS) datasets and a literature review was conducted. The BC CWBS was analyzed using Python to identify temporal and seasonal trends to inform conservation efforts. ArcMap was used to examine shorebird distribution on Iona Island for targeted ecological restoration.
