Description

Outer couplet on the front of the Great Shrine Hall (Daiyū Hōden 大雄寶殿) in Manpuku-ji Temple (萬福寺), an Ōbaku 黄檗 Zen temple in Uji 宇治, Kyoto prefecture 京都府, Japan. Outer couplet on the right side in front of the Great Shrine Hall reads "碧水丹山設長生之畫" (Emerald waters and cinnabar mountains constitute the painting of eternal life) (Image 01). Outer couplet on the left side in front of the Great Shrine Hall reads "紅輪白日献無盡之燈" (The red, wheel-shaped sun provides the lamp with an endless supply of light) (Image 02). They are written by Master Kousen Shōto 高泉性潡 (1633-1695), the fifth abbot of Manpuku-ji.
