Description

Inward-facing couplet flanking the alter in the Great Shrine Hall (Daiyū Hōden 大雄寶殿) in Manpuku-ji Temple (萬福寺), an Ōbaku 黄檗 Zen temple in Uji 宇治, Kyoto prefecture 京都府, Japan. The couplet on the right side of the offertory box reads "一莖草現紫金容赴感流慈道被三千世界" (In a single blade of grass manifests a face of purple and gold, responding to sentient beings with compassion; the Way pervades three thousand realms) (Image 02). Inward-facing couplet on the left side of the offertory box reads "萬德功圓淨妙智隨機化物恩加百億人天" (Complete in myriad virtues, pure and wondrous wisdom, adapting skillful means to liberate beings; grace extends to billions of human beings and celestial beings) (Image 02). They are written by Master Mu'an Xingtao (Jp. Mokuan Shōtō) 木庵性瑫 (1611-1684), the second abbot of Manpuku-ji.
