Couplets near to the Main Buddha Statue in the Great Shrine Hall (Daiyū Hōden 大雄寶殿), Manpukiji (萬福寺) Liu, Jeffrey; Wan, Ziling

Description

Couplet flanking the alter in the Great Shrine Hall (Daiyū Hōden 大雄寶殿) in Manpuku-ji Temple (萬福寺), an Ōbaku 黄檗 Zen temple in Uji 宇治, Kyoto prefecture 京都府, Japan. The right couplet of the Main Buddha Statue reads "宗門肇啓廓天心祇樹林中十聖三賢皆景仰" (The divine providence is revealed in the inception of Buddhism; within Jetavana Park, ten sages and three worthies all hold Buddhism in esteem) (Image 01). The left couplet of the Main Buddha Statue reads " 紺殿莊嚴光佛日寶華坐上千枝萬葉永流芳" (The Buddha's light illuminates like the sun in the solemn indigo hall; thousands of branches and innumerable leaves eternally exude fragrance atop the treasured lotus seat) (Image 02). They are written by the founder of Ōbaku school, Master Yinyuan Longqi (Jp. Ingen Ryūki) 隠元隆琦 (1592-1673).
