Description

The Tsuugenmon (通玄門) at Manpukuji (萬福寺), an Ōbaku Zen (黄檗) temple in Uji 宇治, Kyoto prefecture 京都府, Japan (Image 01 ). The wooden plaque above the gate reads "通玄". It was written by Yinyuan Longqi (Jp. Ingen Ryūki) 隠元隆琦 (1592-1673) in 1665 at the age of 73 (Image 02, Image 03, and Image 04). A pair of couplet plaque flank the right and left side of the gate. The first line of the couplet (right) reads "門開蘭桂香弥遠" (Image 05). The second line of the couplet (left) reads "塔蔭人天福莫量" (Image 06, Image 07, and Image 08).
