Description
The Kaizando (開山堂) or Founder's Hall at Manpukuji (萬福寺), an Ōbaku Zen (黄檗) temple in Uji 宇治, Kyoto prefecture 京都府, Japan. For the South elevation of Kaizando, see Image 0.0 and kaizando legend. There are four pairs of couplets and two plaques. The upper plaque reads "瞎驢眼." It was written by Hin Tsuuyuu (Image 05). The bottom plaque reads "開山堂." It was written by Mu'an Xingtao (Jp. Mokuan Shōtō) 木庵性瑫 (1611-1684) (Image 02). The right inscription reads "延保三年乙卯穀旦" (Image 04). The left inscription reads "嗣法徒木庵瑫等立" (Image 03). The first couplet states "佩祖印渡鯨波盡道達摩現在, 振宗門開檗嶠分明斷際重來." The second couplet states "赤手闢叢林名传帝阙, 通身現眼目光照桑天." The third couplet states "德重紫宸特賜師名尊一國, 山開黃檗高懸宗鏡照千秋." The fourth couplet states "道著南天第一, 教传東國無雙." Check the kaizando legend for the layout.
