Description

The Juto (寿塔) in Manpukuji (萬福寺), an Ōbaku Zen (黄檗) temple in Uji 宇治, Kyoto prefecture 京都府, Japan. The front courtyard of the Juto is depicted in Image 01, including the outer gate, the roof, the plague in vertical text direction, the wooden door, and a pair of couplet. The plaque states "眞空塔" and was written by Emperor Reigen 霊元 (r. 1654-1732). The words "壽藏" are inscribed on the two wooden doors. This calligraphy was written by Yinyuan Longqi (Jp. Ingen Ryūki) 隠元隆琦 (1592-1673). The first line of the couplet (right) states "天開壽蔵長生日"(Image 02). The second line of couplet (left) states "地湧松岡不老春" (Image 02).
