Hall of Ksitigarbha (Dizang Dian 地藏殿) of Buseoksa Temple 浮石寺 Zhang, Jie
Description
One of the murals around the Hall of Ksitigarba (Dizang Dian 地藏殿) at Buseoksa Temple (浮石寺) depicts the Bodhisattva Leading the Way 引路王菩薩 ferrying deceased souls on a prajna dragon boat 般若龍船. This image first appeared in Illustrations of Maitreya-vyakarana-Sutra in 13th century during the Koryo Dynasty 高麗 (918–1392). This iconography became popular in the Joseon period 朝鮮 (1392–1894) due to the increased popularity of Pureland Amitabha belief. Bodhisattva Ksitigarba is known for salvaging deceased souls from hell, and appeared as part of the divine entourage ferrying deceased souls in the Joseon Dynasty.
