St Bartholomew’s Priory, also known as “St Bartholomew the Great”, “The Priory Church of St Bartholomew, West Smithfield” Gauthier, Charlotte

Description

St Bartholomew's Priory was founded in 1123 by Rahere, formerly jester or minstrel at the court of Henry I, son of William the Conqueror. Rahere had seen a vision of Saint Bartholomew whilst on a pilgrimage to Rome; Bartholomew enjoined Rahere to found a church and hospital in Smithfield, London - then a marshy waste ground home to the town gallows. Henry I gave Rahere the funds needed to found a house of Augustinian canons and a hospital. The priory grew from 13 canons to over 35 by the end of the Middle Ages. It was dissolved in 1539 as part of Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. The nave was knocked down and much of the priory lands and buildings sold off; the quire became a parish church that still holds Church of England services today.
