Description

These two niches are located in Beishan Rock Carvings (北山石刻), Fowan (佛灣), Dazu (大足) District, Chongqing. Niche 258 depicts a seated bodhisattva with circular halos behind his body and head. The bodhisattva is bald. His eyes open wide, and his hands are lost. A snake entwines his rock throne. Niche 259 depicts a bodhisattva seated with crossed legs on a Sumeru throne. The bodhisattva with a circular halo wears a tall crown, and his costume is adorned with jewellery. The left hand is placed on the throne, while the right is damaged. A small donor image is depicted on the bodhisattva’s left side, with two similar figures on the right. The donor images are severely eroded. Descriptions of the photos: Key to the niches [1].
