Policy Recommendations for Optimizing the Clinical Nurse Specialist Workforce in British Columbia Lambert, Leah Kimberley; Lauck, Sandra B.
Abstract
We sought to identify, generate, and contextualize contemporary evidence to support policy development and recommendations to address current and longstanding challenges and opportunities to improve Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) role development, implementation, and evaluation. The objective of the study was to inform the development of policy and strategies to ensure the optimization, effectiveness, and long-term sustainability of CNS roles. Study findings and outputs are intended to drive essential improvements to health equity and the delivery of accessible, high quality, specialized healthcare in BC and beyond. In the following report, we summarize (1) pertinent findings, (2) guiding principles for policy setting, and (3) recommendations to strengthen the CNS role in BC and beyond. This policy recommendation report was developed by co-principal investigators Leah Lambert and Sandra Lauck in collaboration with the BC Provincial Nursing Allied Health Council (PNAHC), where we received strong endorsement from BC's Chief Nursing Officers (CNOs) and the Ministry of Health. We acknowledge the valuable contributions of the broader study team through the foundational research that informed the development of this work.
