I will give an overview of how the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism can be incorporated into perturbative algebraic quantum field theory in full generality and I will discuss two examples: gauge theories and effective quantum gravity. In the latter case, there is an additional difficulty in constructing gauge-invariant observables. I will explain how this is addressed in our approach.
