I will review several results obtained in collaboration with Philippe Gravejat, Christian
Hainzl and Eric Séré on a mean-field model in QED. I will particularly discuss charge renormalization
and the derivation of the Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian. I will also mention the advantages and disadvantages of the model, as well as open problems.
