Description	We will describe the several unexpected examples of totally geodesic surfaces in the moduli space of curves endowed with its Teichmuller metric. Our examples arise from the study of dihedral curves and plane cubics, and they reveal surprising connections between Teichmuller theory and algebraic geometry. This work is joint with Eskin, McMullen and Wright.
